Explained

What it does

At the end of the Battle Phase, if your opponent controls more cards than you, they must banish cards from their field face-down until they control the same number as you. If you control no cards, you can activate it from your hand.

Play it when

Going second, at the end of your own Battle Phase after you've used your resources, to cut down your opponent's board. From the hand when your field is empty.

Common mistakes
  • Thinking you choose which cards are banished. Your opponent chooses.
  • Activating it outside the end of the Battle Phase.

How it works

Evenly Matched is a Normal Trap. At the end of the Battle Phase, if your opponent controls more cards than you, you can make them banish cards from their field face-down until they control the same number of cards as you. If you control no cards, you can activate it from your hand.

When to use it

It’s a board breaker for when your opponent has built a big field. Activating it from the hand at the end of your Battle Phase, with nothing on your field, makes them banish down to zero.

Rulings in plain English

When exactly? During the End Step of either player’s Battle Phase.

Who chooses what’s banished? Your opponent chooses cards on their field.

Does it get past monsters unaffected by Traps? Yes. The effect is applied to the player, not the monsters, and cards banished this way aren’t treated as removed by a Trap’s effect.

Is the hand activation an effect? No, it’s a rule. You place it face-up in your Spell & Trap Zone and activate it, on either player’s turn.
