Effect Monster

Card text

If you control no face-up monsters, you can Special Summon this card (from your hand). If Summoned this way, treat this card as a Tuner. You can discard 1 card, then reveal 1 WATER Synchro Monster in your Extra Deck; add 1 WATER monster from your Deck to your hand with the same Type but 1 Level lower than the revealed monster, then you can change this card to face-down Defense Position, also you cannot Special Summon from the Extra Deck for the rest of this turn, except WATER monsters. You can only use this effect of "First Penguin" once per turn.

Explained

What it does

If you control no face-up monsters, Special Summon it from your hand, treated as a Tuner. Discard a card and reveal a WATER Synchro Monster to search a WATER monster of the same Type but 1 Level lower, then you can flip it face-down.

Play it when

In WATER and Penguin Synchro decks as an opener: summon it for free, then search the other monster for a Synchro Summon.

Common mistakes
  • Summoning WATER-only restriction aside: after the search, you can only Special Summon WATER monsters from the Extra Deck that turn.
  • Using the self-summon while you control a face-up monster.

How it works

  • Self-summon: If you control no face-up monsters, Special Summon this card from your hand. Summoned this way, it’s treated as a Tuner while face-up.
  • Search (once per turn): Discard 1 card, then reveal 1 WATER Synchro Monster in your Extra Deck. Add 1 WATER monster from your Deck with the same Type but 1 Level lower than the revealed monster. Then you can change this card to face-down Defense Position. For the rest of the turn, you can only Special Summon WATER monsters from the Extra Deck.

When to use it

The searched monster’s Level is 1 lower than the Synchro you revealed, and First Penguin is Level 1, so together they’re set up for that Synchro. Flipping it face-down can let you flip it again later for other effects.

Rulings in plain English

Does the self-summon start a chain? No.

Order: Search first; if that works, you can flip it face-down. Not simultaneous.

Does the restriction apply if the search fails? Yes, unless the effect was negated.

Royal Penguins Garden, Penguin Soldier.
