Explained

What it does

When your opponent Special Summons a monster face-up, discard this card to target one; negate its effects until end of turn, and if it leaves the field this turn, its controller takes damage equal to its original ATK.

Play it when

As a hand trap against Special Summoned monsters.

Common mistakes
  • Expecting damage if the monster gets flipped face-down first. The effect stops applying.
  • Expecting damage from a monster with ? ATK.

How it works

Trigger, in your hand (once per turn): If your opponent Special Summons a monster(s) face-up (not in the Damage Step), discard this card, then target 1 of those monsters; negate its effects until the end of this turn. Also, if it leaves the field this turn, its controller takes damage equal to its original ATK.

Rulings in plain English

Cost: Discarding is the cost.

Target gone: If the target isn’t face-up in the Monster Zone when it resolves, nothing happens.

Damage: Not a chain; it applies right away when the monster leaves, even in the Damage Step. It uses the printed ATK. A monster with ? ATK deals no damage. If the monster is changed to face-down Defense Position, the effect ends.

Leaving as a cost: If the monster leaves the field as a cost for its own effect, that effect is still negated.
