Explained

What it does

A Continuous Trap. Each player can only control 1 Type of monster and sends all other face-up monsters they control to the GY.

Play it when

As a Limited card (1 copy) in a deck built around one monster Type, against opponents who mix Types.

Common mistakes
  • Thinking it stops face-down summons. Anyone can still Set a monster or Special Summon in face-down Defense Position.
  • Activating it in the Damage Step.

How it works

Status: Limited in the TCG (Sept 21, 2026 list), so you can run 1 copy.

Rivalry of Warlords is a Continuous Trap. While it’s face-up, each player can only control 1 Type of monster, and sends all other face-up monsters they control to the GY.

Rulings in plain English

Activation: Not in the Damage Step. The effect itself isn’t activated; it applies while the card is face-up.

When it starts applying: A player with face-up monsters of 2+ Types sends monsters to the GY until they control only 1 Type.

Summoning: You can’t Normal Summon, Flip Summon, or face-up Special Summon a monster of a different Type from your face-up monsters. You also can’t summon a different Type to your opponent’s field than their face-up monsters. Setting and face-down Special Summons are still fine.

Flips and control changes: If these create a second Type, the monster that newly became face-up there is sent to the GY, with no chain. If several are flipped or summoned at once, some or all of those are sent.

Not affected by the Trap: Monsters sent this way are chosen by the player and aren’t treated as sent by a Trap effect, so Trap immunity doesn’t stop it.
