Explained
If it's sent from the field to the GY, add 1 monster with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck to your hand, but you can't activate cards or effects with that name for the rest of the turn. Once per turn.
As material for a Link or other summon in decks with good targets at 1500 ATK or less, so using it up also finds your next card.
- Thinking you can activate the card you searched that turn. You can't activate it or its effects, though you can still Normal Summon it.
- Forgetting the effect is mandatory. It always activates when the condition is met.
How it works
If Sangan is sent from the field to the GY, add 1 monster with 1500 or less ATK from your Deck to your hand. For the rest of the turn, you can’t activate cards, or the effects of cards, with that name. You can only use this effect of “Sangan” once per turn.
When to use it
Sangan has been around since 2002 and is still useful because many monsters have low ATK. Using it as material for a Link or other summon replaces it with a card. The restriction means you’ll usually search something to use on a later turn, or to Normal Summon.
Rulings in plain English
Is it optional? No. It must activate when the condition is met, including in the Damage Step, even if you can’t search.
Can I search a Normal Monster? Yes.
When does the restriction apply? Only if Sangan’s effect resolves. It lasts from then until the end of the turn.
What can I still do with the searched card? Normal Summon it, and effects that don’t activate still apply. You can’t activate it or its effects, including placing a searched Pendulum Monster in the Pendulum Zone.
Can I search a card I already used this turn? Yes.
