Explained

What it does

A Fusion of "Dark Magician" + "Red-Eyes Black Dragon" or a Dragon Effect Monster. It can't be destroyed or targeted by card effects, destroys monsters and burns for their original ATK (once per Normal Monster used as material), and discards to negate an activation once per turn.

Play it when

As a boss monster in Dark Magician and Red-Eyes decks: hard to remove, with a negation each turn.

Common mistakes
  • Using the destroy/burn effect when no Normal Monster was used as material. You can't.
  • Expecting burn damage from a monster with ? ATK printed.

How it works

Materials: “Dark Magician” + “Red-Eyes Black Dragon” or 1 Dragon Effect Monster.

  • Continuous: Can’t be destroyed by card effects, and neither player can target it with card effects.
  • Main Phase: Destroy 1 monster your opponent controls, and inflict damage equal to its original ATK. You can use this as many times per turn as the number of Normal Monsters used as its Fusion Material.
  • Quick Effect (once per turn): When a card or effect is activated, discard 1 card to negate the activation, destroy that card, and gain 1000 ATK.

When to use it

Dragoon is one of the strongest single monsters for Dark Magician fans: it shrugs off most removal and stops one play per turn.

Rulings in plain English

Destroy/burn: Doesn’t target; you choose at resolution. Destroying and damage are simultaneous. It uses the printed ATK (“?” deals nothing). If Dragoon was banished and returned, or flipped face-down and back, it can’t use this.

Negate: Discarding is the cost. Usable in the Damage Step. Negating, destroying and the ATK gain are simultaneous. The 1000 ATK goes away if Dragoon’s effects are negated or it leaves the field.

Dark Magician, Red-Eyes Black Dragon.
