Monster, Spell and Trap cards explained

How to read any Yu-Gi-Oh! card: what each part means, what the card colors tell you, and how Spells and Traps differ.

Every Yu-Gi-Oh! card is a Monster, a Spell or a Trap, and the color of the card frame tells you which kind at a glance. Once you know the layout, you can read any card in seconds.

Reading a Monster card

  • Card name. Cards with the same name are treated as the same card. That matters for the 3-copy limit and for “once per turn” effects that name a card.
  • Attribute. The symbol in the top right corner: DARK, EARTH, FIRE, LIGHT, WATER or WIND. Some card effects care about it.
  • Level. Count the stars under the name. Level decides how many Tributes a Normal Summon needs (see summoning). Xyz Monsters have a Rank instead, shown with stars on the left. Link Monsters have a Link Rating instead.
  • Type. In brackets above the text, for example [Spellcaster/Effect]. The first word is the monster’s Type. Extra words tell you more, like Tuner, Fusion or Link.
  • Card description. The monster’s effects. Yellow Normal Monsters have flavor text here that doesn’t affect the game.
  • ATK and DEF. Used in battle. Link Monsters have no DEF and can never be in Defense Position.

Monster effects normally can’t be used while the monster is Set face-down.

The four kinds of monster effects

The rulebook splits monster effects into four categories:

  • Continuous Effect: always on while the monster is face-up on the field. Nothing to activate.
  • Ignition Effect: you activate it during your own Main Phase, sometimes by paying a cost like discarding or Tributing.
  • Quick Effect: can be activated even on your opponent’s turn. These have Spell Speed 2 (see spell speeds). Hand traps like Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring are Quick Effects.
  • Trigger Effect: activates at a specific time, like “when this card is destroyed”. Flip effects (“FLIP:”) are Trigger Effects that activate when the monster is flipped face-up.

What the colors mean

Frame color Kind of card Where it starts
Yellow Normal Monster (no effect) Main Deck
Orange Effect Monster Main Deck
Light blue Ritual Monster Main Deck
Purple Fusion Monster Extra Deck
White Synchro Monster Extra Deck
Black Xyz Monster Extra Deck
Dark blue, with arrows around the art Link Monster Extra Deck
Monster color on top, green on the bottom Pendulum Monster Main Deck
Green Spell Main Deck
Pink-purple Trap Main Deck

Extra Deck monsters can’t be drawn. You summon them by meeting their requirements, explained in our summoning guide.

Spell Cards

Spells can normally be activated only during your Main Phase. Spells without an icon are Normal Spells. The others:

  • Normal Spell: one use, then it goes to the Graveyard.
  • Ritual Spell: used to Ritual Summon. Played like a Normal Spell.
  • Continuous Spell: stays on the field and keeps working while it’s face-up.
  • Equip Spell: gives an effect to one face-up monster (yours or your opponent’s, depending on the card). If that monster is destroyed, flipped face-down or leaves the field, the Equip Spell is destroyed.
  • Field Spell: goes in your Field Zone. Each player can have one. Playing a new one sends your old one to the Graveyard. Many Field Spells affect both players.
  • Quick-Play Spell: can be activated in any phase of your turn. If you Set it first, you can also activate it on your opponent’s turn, but not on the turn you Set it.

You can Set any Spell face-down, but except for Quick-Plays, a Set Spell still only works during your Main Phase. Setting one can bluff a Trap.

Trap Cards

You must Set a Trap before you can activate it, and you can’t activate it the turn you Set it. From the next turn on, you can activate it at any time it’s legal, including on your opponent’s turn. Some cards break this rule: Infinite Impermanence can be activated from the hand if you control no cards.

  • Normal Trap: one use, then it goes to the Graveyard.
  • Continuous Trap: stays on the field while face-up.
  • Counter Trap: usually activated in response to another card, often to negate it. Counter Traps are Spell Speed 3, the fastest in the game.

Main Deck vs Extra Deck

Your Deck (40 to 60 cards) holds Normal, Effect, Ritual and Pendulum Monsters plus all your Spells and Traps. Your Extra Deck (up to 15 cards) holds Fusion, Synchro, Xyz and Link Monsters. Since the 2021 rules update, Fusion, Synchro and Xyz Monsters can be summoned to any of your Main Monster Zones. Link Monsters, and Pendulum Monsters summoned from the Extra Deck, still need the Extra Monster Zone or a zone a Link Monster points to.

Reading card text

The official format uses punctuation to tell you what happens when:

  • Before a colon (:) — the condition or timing for activating.
  • Before a semicolon (;) — what you do when you activate, including any cost. Costs are paid even if the activation is later negated.
  • After both — what happens when the effect resolves.

Next: the phases of a turn.
