Explained

What it does

Discard it from your hand to negate an effect that would add a card from the Deck to the hand, Special Summon from the Deck, or send a card from the Deck to the GY.

Play it when

When your opponent activates the search or Deck summon their turn depends on. Since it works from your hand, it's one of the few ways to interact while your opponent is going first.

Common mistakes
  • Thinking it negates the activation. It negates the effect, so the card was still activated.
  • Trying to use it in the Damage Step. Its FAQ says it can't be activated then.
  • Forgetting the once-per-turn limit covers every copy, not just one.

How it works

Ash Blossom is a hand trap: a Quick Effect you activate from your hand. When a card or effect is activated that includes any of these, you can discard Ash to negate that effect:

  • Adding a card from the Deck to the hand
  • Special Summoning from the Deck
  • Sending a card from the Deck to the GY

Discarding Ash is the cost. You can only use this effect of “Ash Blossom & Joyous Spring” once per turn, so a second copy can’t be used the same turn.

When to use it

Ash answers the effects most combos start with: searches and Deck summons. The skill is in the timing. Many turns use several searches, and Ash can only stop one, so save it for the effect the rest of the turn depends on when you can.

Ash is legal at 3 copies in the TCG.

Rulings in plain English

Does it target? No. It’s chained directly to the effect it negates.

What exactly gets negated? The whole effect of the chain link you respond to. If that effect does several things and only one of them is on Ash’s list, the entire effect is still negated, not just the matching part.

Can I use it during the Damage Step? No.

Is discarding a cost? Yes, so it’s paid on activation even if Ash itself gets negated.

Other hand traps with different targets: Ghost Belle & Haunted Mansion for Graveyard effects, Droll & Lock Bird for repeated searching, and Effect Veiler for monsters already on the field. See our guide to hand traps.
