What it does

Target 1 monster in your opponent's GY and banish it. Until the end of the next turn, its effects, and the activated and on-field effects of monsters with the same original name, are negated.

Play it when

Against a monster in your opponent's Graveyard that would come back or use a GY effect, or after a hand trap is used, to stop further copies of it.

Common mistakes
  • Expecting it to stop effects in the hand or GY that don't activate. It doesn't negate those.
  • Forgetting it hits monsters with that name on both sides of the field.
  • Playing more than 1 copy. It's Limited in the TCG as of October 2026.

How it works

Called by the Grave is a Quick-Play Spell. Target 1 monster in your opponent’s GY and banish it. If you do, until the end of the next turn, its effects are negated, and so are the activated effects and on-field effects of monsters with the same original name.

When to use it

Two common uses:

  • Before a Graveyard monster acts. Banishing it removes it from the GY and its name is shut off for two turns.
  • After a hand trap. Banish the used hand trap and other copies of it can’t be activated until the end of next turn.

It’s Limited (1 copy) in the TCG as of October 2026.

Rulings in plain English

Can I target a Normal Monster? Yes.

Whose monsters are affected? Monsters with that original name on both sides.

What’s negated? Effects those monsters activate, and effects that apply while face-up in the Monster Zone without starting a chain.

What isn’t negated? Effects that apply in the hand, in the GY, or while face-down without starting a chain. Also, if one of those monsters is used as a Spell or Trap (for example in a Pendulum Zone), effects it has as that Spell/Trap aren’t negated.

Can I use it during the Damage Step? No.
